Fairmont Singapore & Swissotel The Stamford

Dynamic Landscape of Digital Marketing for the Hospitality Industry

In an interview with Julia Lim,Senior Director of Marketing, Fairmont Singapore &Swissotel The Stamford, she outlines the various challenges faced by the marketing industry and the improved ways in which people are getting their brands through to the customers using newer and more engaging forms of digital marketing.

1. What are some of the major challenges and trends that have been impacting Digital Marketing? The hospitality industry was one of the worst hit during the pandemic. With travel on the rebound since last year, competition has grown evidently keener, especially in a dynamic market like Singapore where operators are hungry for business. Increasingly, we see hotels, restaurants, bars, spas and convention centres – all spaces that we compete in - getting more creative when marketing online. From big budget ad campaigns by giant chains to micro-influencer programmesfrom independent brands, we have seen many permutations of marketing delivery combining channels, activations and content. It is definitely a race to be the first in the market!

2. What keeps you up at night when it comes to some of the major predicaments in Digital Marketing?

Content is king for digital marketing; and all forms of marketing for that matter. How we stand out in the market is first dependent on the idea, then the creation of content and assets to support that idea. This begs the question of how we can continually create interesting and novel content without having to reinvent the wheel each time, and still focus on our core business of hospitality.

Rather than battling this alone, we explored partnerships and licensed experiences to enhance our value offering and further differentiate ourselves from the competition, rather successfully. Collaborating with respected brands in their respective fields such as Razer and Givenchy, we transformed existing real estate and products from both parties into brand new experiences. With innovative offerings such as luxury gaming suites and premium product-led spa treatments from a global fashion house, we now have very strong and appealing experiences to present to niche segments. How we then do that, is a strategic plan and execution of using the best digital channels and activations to reach these audiences.

3. What are some of the technological trends which excite you for the future of Digital Marketing? There has been a lot of conversation around the Metaverse for travel. With the advancements in this area, it will be interesting to see how it can be a part of the guest’s travel journey. Imagine a  virtual world where, before the guest even physically steps into your hotel, their avatars can already  explore your suites that look out to famed views; experience the outstanding service at your award winning restaurant; or enjoy a nightcap at your award-winning bar pulsating with the latest beats.  Wouldn’t that inspire you to travel?

Progression in AI for content creation is another area I am keeping my eye on. The use of ChatGPTto create copies or Midjourney for image generation hold huge promises for the future of digital marketing with high potential in driving efficiency and productivity, especially for the scale at which we operate at Fairmont Singapore &Swissôtel The Stamford with two five-star hotels; twelve restaurants and bars; a 100,000 sqft premium convention centre and a 50,000 sqft spa.
